A crown is the formal dental term for what many people commonly refer to as a "cap". A crown is a restoration designed to be placed over a tooth to restore its strength and and function, and/or improve its appearance.
A crown may be needed in cases where a tooth has suffered a traumatic fracture, wear due to teeth grinding, tooth decay, cracked fillings or root canals.
Most crowns done today, including those done in our office, are made out of porcelain, to insure that they are as life-like, and look as much like your won natural tooth as is possible. Our office can do crowns made out of all gold if the patient desires.
A crown will give your tooth the strength and natural feel of a real tooth, and after a short adjustment period, you will not even know you have anything but your own natural tooth.
